From Townie to Tourist: Your guide to exploring Oakville as we reopen

We know that recent travel restrictions have limited many of your vacations, but there is no better way to experience the rush of exploring a new place than becoming a tourist in your own backyard!

Whether you’re a resident of Oakville or visiting from one of our surrounding regions, local hotels, businesses and attractions are working diligently to create a safe, clean and comfortable environment for all.

Keep reading and check out our Welcome Back Oakville page to learn more about how to explore Oakville during this time, and follow along with our itineraries at the bottom to get the most out of your time away from home.

1. Plan ahead

Travel can’t be as spontaneous as it once was, so make sure to do your research ahead of time. Most activities require advanced booking and increased wait times, so start planning out your itinerary well before your planned vacation date.

2. Respect local rules

Every town, city, region and province has different safety and cleaning stipulations, so please look into Oakville’s and Halton Region’s policies before settling into your time away from home. Please remember to be respectful of local vendors, as each individual business also has conduct/hygiene regulations specific to their storefront.

3. Travel in smaller groups

Though you might be used to exploring the world with an entire crew of family and friends, small groups are more able to adhere to social distancing and easier for businesses to accommodate under local COVID-19 protocols. Instead of travelling with a large group, try planning an intimate R&R vacation with a couple of close people in your social circle.

4. Pack the essentials

Wallet, keys, phone, mask, hand sanitizer. Some businesses require face coverings when indoors and we want you to enjoy Oakville to the fullest. Please come prepared with your most fashionable masks to ensure you’re keeping yourselves and everyone around you safe. Also, remember to wash and sanitize your hands frequently.

5. Social distance

We are so excited to start welcoming residents and visitors back as Oakville begins to reopen, but we ask that everyone taking to our streets respects the rules of social distancing. Give people two metres of space inside and out and be respectful of others in your immediate area.

6. Be patient and take it easy

Because of the enhanced precautions each business is taking to ensure your safety during this time, their service might not come as quickly as normal. Whether you’re waiting for your patio reservation, waiting to get into your favourite store or simply waiting for some space to clear on the pier, please stay patient and remember that we’re all in this together.

7. Support local

Oakville’s tourism partners have been working diligently to welcome you back and are relying on your business to help stay afloat. Save the chains for later and support local small businesses that are working hard to serve the community during this time. Check out our shop and dine map for up-to-date information on local shops and restaurants.

Show us how you’re supporting local by using #WelcomeBackOakville on social!
