We had a chance to sit down with five amazing local business owners and hear their thoughts, key successes, their favourite spots in Oakville and what’s up next for their businesses.

What’s a fun fact about your business that people might not know?
What brings most folks to The Splendid Olive is the quest for delicious olive oil. But what keeps them coming back? It’s discovering the remarkable health benefits of our fresh EVOO when they visit. It’s not just about taste; it’s about nourishing well-being, and that’s why our customers become devoted to our products.
What’s the most popular item in your store?
There are two items that are neck and neck for most popular. First is our most recent addition which is a Koroneiki Greek EVOO that comes from fourth generation growers in the south region of Greece. It’s incredibly healthy with a super high polyphenol count and a herbaceous rich flavour. The other most popular item is a staple in all of our customer pantries, our Traditional Cask 18 balsamic vinegar from Modena, Italy. We receive people coming back time and time again for it, even having to hide it from their family members so it isn’t gone too quick!
What sets your business apart from competitors?
We are proud to be a women owned business that’s independently owned and operated. We source all our products ourselves from the best suppliers in the world, working only with growers and suppliers that certify the quality of their products. We know that what we’re sharing with our community is top notch, premium quality olive oil with incredible health benefits.
Can you share some of the key milestones and successes your business has achieved?
One of our proudest moments was stepping out independently this year and rebranding as The Splendid Olive. We’ve been able to expand our product range of best-in-class EVOO’s and we also carry a variety of unique and gourmet pantry items. Most importantly, we’ve received heartwarming feedback from customers who’ve experienced the health benefits of our olive oils, which is a driving force for our purpose.
What or where is your favourite place in Oakville?
Kerr Village, where our store is located, holds a special place in our hearts. The sense of community here is remarkable. We love exploring the local shops, enjoying meals at charming restaurants, and taking leisurely strolls by the lake. Oakville’s picturesque waterfront, with its parks and trails, is also a favorite spot for relaxation and inspiration.
What advice would you offer to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own small businesses?
Our advice to aspiring entrepreneurs is to be authentic and passionate about your business. Believe in the value you bring to your community and stay committed to maintaining high standards. Embrace every opportunity to learn and adapt, as flexibility is key in the ever-evolving business landscape. Finally, don’t underestimate the power of building strong relationships with your customers; they are your most valuable advocates.
How does your business contribute to the local community?
We take pride in being an active member of the Oakville community. Beyond offering high-quality products, we host workshops with local partners at our store where they are able to showcase their talents and we educate participants about the culinary and health benefits of olive oil. We’re also active members of the Oakville Chamber of Commerce which is a fabulous organization that supports local businesses.
