The August long weekend is here, and that means it is time to take a quick break from the daily hustle and bustle from the week. Though some people may choose to relax at home or take a road trip out of town, this is the perfect time to get out and explore your own backyard. Unsure of what to do or where to go? Continue reading to learn about the 10 things you need to do in Oakville during the long weekend.
Watch the sunrise at Tannery Park
Get up early and watch the sunrise at this gorgeous elevated lakeside park. There is nothing more beautiful than watching the golden sun and the infinite blue waters of Lake Ontario at sunrise. You’ll be able to see the vast Oakville lakeshore and even the Toronto skyline from this gorgeous outlook. Bring your camera to take photos or take a seat on one of the park’s benches. Sunrise is around 6 a.m. in the summer.
Grab a coffee at Vereda Central Coffee Roasters
Raise your hand if you’re a coffee lover!
My morning is not complete without a cup of coffee, and Vereda Central Coffee Roaster is the best place to get one. The Best Café Talk of the Town Award-winner is a Responsible Trade & Fair Trade Colombian Coffee Roaster with Colombian coffee growers. They ensure that Colombian farmers are directly benefited from each business transaction, improving their quality of life.
This cafe sells delicious coffee, baked goods and even takeaway coffee beans. They recently opened a new location at 1011 Upper Middle Rd E. Stop by, you will not regret it.

Play Glow in the dark mini golf at Putting Edge
Enter a universe full of fun, imagination and activity at Putting Edge! Their unique black-lit golf course surrounded by glow-in-the-dark colours and images is a great way to engage in a little friendly competition with family and friends. The recommended ages to play at Putting Edge are 8 to 88, making it the perfect spot to take the whole family. Some holes even come with unique challenges, such as 15 where you have to try and play without having your feet touch the floor.
Go to the mall- Oakville place
I love to shop. One of the best places to shop in Oakville is Oakville Place Mall. With its sophisticated mix of stores and peaceful atmosphere, this mall is a shopping paradise. Not to mention, this mall is home to one of few L.L. Beans in Ontario and a newly renovated H&M.
Visit the Oakville Civitan Farmers’ Market at Dorval Crossing
If you’re looking for ways to support small businesses, this should be one of your first stops. The Oakville Civitan Farmers’ Market operates from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday until November 28, showcasing seasonal local produce and locally-made food products from vendors at great prices. There was a great selection of fruits, veggies, baked goods and more! I walked away with some wild honey, raisin bread and apples. I will definitely be visiting this market again.
Visit a beach – Bronte Beach
There is nothing better than a sandy beach and clear water. Head on down to Bronte beach and soak up some sun. Bring your beach towel or water toys and have some fun. This is a kid-friendly beach with shallow waters and lots of sand. It’s a nice place for a picnic too.
Grab Lunch at Chippy’s
Craving french fries for lunch? Visit Chippy’s Fresh Cut Fries. This bright yellow food truck operated by friendly staff offers up many delicious dishes. Their menu includes regular fries, poutine, burgers, milkshakes and so much more. This food gem can be found at the corner of Royal Windsor Dr. and Winston Churchill Boulevard.
Watch a movie under the stars at the 5 Drive-In
This iconic retro drive-in is the perfect place to watch a movie on a summer evening. Sit in your car or in a lawn chair and immerse yourself in the movie. You can’t watch without snacks, and the drive-in will not disappoint with their wide variety of tasty food. Visitors are asked to stay inside or near their vehicle when watching the movie and wear a mask whenever they enter the concession or restrooms.
Book a stay at a Hotel
Treat yourself to a home away from home by staying at a local hotel. The tourism industry has been suffering due to the loss of regular summer travellers, and Oakville’s hotel industry is no exception. Consider supporting the following hotels by booking a couple of nights for a little staycation, reserving their meeting rooms for work gatherings, hosting your next get celebration in their event spaces or inviting family and friends into town for a visit.
