Join us for our Authors on Art series with acclaimed writer Terri Favro. A novelist, essayist and storyteller, Favro writes about the Cold War as a fictional but familiar alternate reality in her novel Sputnik’s Children and as the key inspiration for early roboticists in her popular science book Generation Robot—an attempt to invent “children” who would save humanity from blowing itself up. Held alongside Pio Abad’s exhibition, which brings together a series of objects and images that draw connections between moments of political and economic upheaval, this talk will see Favro explore how the Bomb continues to inspire her stories, how new fears (climate change and robots among them) have replaced the Bomb as our ultimate weapons of self-destruction, and how fear of the Bomb has turned into “muscle memory” for the anxious generation that grew up in its shadow.
