Celebrating Small Business Week: Supporting Oakville’s Local Gems – Profile on Sandwich Society

Small businesses are the backbone of our communities, injecting character, innovation, and vitality into our cities and towns. Small Business Week (October 15 – 21) is a time to recognize and celebrate these local gems that contribute so much to our economy and culture.

We had a chance to sit down with five amazing local business owners and hear their thoughts, key successes, their favourite spots in Oakville and what’s up next for their businesses.

This interview is with Laurent Rossier, Co-Owner of Sandwich Society.

Nestled in Kerr Village, Oakville, Sandwich Society is the go-to spot for Tuscan inspired Italian gourmet sandwiches and amazing charcuterie boards in a variety of sizes. They also offer wonderful salads, healthy bowls, grazing boxes, and picnic lunches, as well as house made spreads and more – all made with the freshest of ingredients. Not only do they offer a take-out option, but Sandwich Society is also offering catering of their delicious products to private and corporate events and their fan base is growing fast. And if that is not enough, Sandwich Society has won numerous awards over the years including a Visit Oakville Talk of the Town Award for Best Sandwich – a great recognition of the outstanding quality of their products.

What is a fun fact about your business that people might not know?

At Sandwich Society, we love to surprise and delight our guests whenever possible. During KerrFest Kids, we hosted a lively ‘Guess the Coffee Beans’ game, challenging our guests to use their intuition to estimate the contents of a sealed jar. The reward? A tantalizing charcuterie board for four. It’s a testament to our belief that dining should and can be a delightful journey. So do come and visit the Sandwich Society where every visit promises excellence and a heap of culinary creativity. And…. The next surprise could be yours!

What is the most popular item in your store?

The David is an absolute crowd favorite, closely followed by the hearty Jefferino. The picnic baskets have been popular ever since the weather has been warm enough to enjoy a relaxing picnic outdoors.

What sets your business apart from competitors?

Our absolute focus and dedication on freshness is key. This can best be illustrated by the Schiacciata bread, freshly baked in-house.
Additionally, we place huge emphasis on our customers and aim to give all our guests an uplifting experience whenever they visit us. But it does not stop there, we put a lot of effort into creating a talented team that works with dedication, hand in hand and is not shy to have a few fun moments during work. Best to come and visit us to feel the positive vibes.

Can you share some of the key milestones and successes your business has achieved?

The first few months after reopening have been challenging and a great learning curve. The first real milestone was the grand opening celebration on May 6. You can get a good feel about the atmosphere on that day by watching a short video here.

Another milestone was the first expansion of our menu with the introduction of bowls and soups, as well as ice cream for the hot summer months.

What or where is your favourite place in Oakville?


We love cycling along Lakeshore and taking strolls on Oakville’s nature trails, especially in fall when the colours are so vibrant. As there is still so much to discover we also like to explore fellow businesses along Kerr Street.

What advice would you offer to aspiring entrepreneurs looking to start their own small businesses?


Do your homework and expect the unexpected. There are so many twists and turns and times are always busy. This can easily lead to situations in which one is blindsided and could easily overlook an abundance of opportunities. Another important piece of information is to never shy away from asking the “stupid” question – everybody always learns.

How does your business contribute to the local community?


We want to add vibrancy and variation to our local community by offering an environment that is second to none. There is still a ways to go and the possibilities are endless. So, we invite all our neighbours and everyone in Oakville to come by and support us.

What makes Oakville such a great destination?

Oakville is a great place to live and run a business. We like the vibrancy, the feel and secure and friendly environment. And yes, there is an abundance of opportunities. Many of our customers have been waiting for a high-end gourmet place like ours – and many more have yet to discover us.

What is next for your business?


We are totally gearing up for the end of the year and are already receiving orders for sandwich platters and large charcuterie boards from the best clients anyone could wish for. We are so blessed that both private individuals as well as companies are entrusting us with their catering orders for the festive season. We are looking at further enhancing the menu and you will most certainly hear more from us in the weeks and months to come thanks to our thematic events – so watch this space.
