We are a curated show and sale of wearable art made and designed by Canadian artists. Wearable to us means just that – to be worn, to revel in, enhancing your life while you are living it. You can put a seatbelt over it and it does not have to be stored in a fridge or freezer. This show is different than WOW (World of Wearable Art) in New Zealand or STRUTT here in Canada where the work is amazing but can be so far out you don’t actually wear it. We are incorporated as a not for profit corporation.
EXPERIENCE THE EXQUISITE, ACQUIRE THE DIVINE is our bi-line and says a lot about who we are and what we are trying to create in this show. We don’t care about being big, we just want to be the best. A jewel box of a show. Where the designers and creators of amazing handmade wearable art and those people who have a passion to purchase and wear it can find each other.
OUR MISSION STATEMENT
The Wearable Art Show exists to benefit and inspire Canadian Artists by creating a unique event allowing others to explore, experience and purchase wearable art”. How we flesh out our mission follows.
The EXPLORE part: This year we have Laurie Lemelin of Abrash Embroidery showcasing her incredible work
She restores vintage work and creates new for theatre and you. Works in progress will be on view as well as finished garments. www.abrashembroidery.com
Watch our relatable fashion show at 1 p.m. to see the work move and come alive. Real women in different sizes, shapes and ages.
Our artists explore too. They will be challenged to make work inspired by a theme and it will push them creatively. You get to vote on your favourite item as well as the judges. This year’s Patron’s Challenge is “Birds of a Feather” (each year a patron gives a $500.00 prize and names the challenge).
The EXPERIENCE part: It’s one thing to look at a piece of art – it’s more fun to try it on! And doing it with friends makes it an experience to remember.
The PURCHASE part: From the artists themselves in their booths. Wearable art comes in many forms! From fabulously funky to Beautifully Delicate – but all unique and original – just like you!
Meet the artist and find out what they were thinking when they created it.
CANADA NEEDS IT”S OWN DEDICATED WEARABLE ART SHOW!
Wearable art is an exciting and growing field. There are a few quality ones going in the United States – Smithsonian Craft2Wear in Washington and MaMo in Hawaii come to mind. We think it’s time Canada steps up to the plate. We are proud to be involved in doing just that.
A BIT ABOUT OUR HISTORY
We started out as ” Just For Us Originals” in 2007 at The Old Mill Inn in Toronto – a show for women by women. Half fine art, half wearable art. Became a dedicated wearable art show in 2009 and opened it up to men artists as well as women.
Incorporated as a not for profit corporation in 2011. Changed the name to “The Wearable Art Show” in 2012. Took one year off in 2016 to make the move to Oakville and make changes so that our 10th show was the best we ever did. This is our 11th show.
