Game Theory Films, a boutique film distribution company from Toronto, will be screening They Call Us Warriors, a social impact documentary following the incredibly inspiring story of the under-17 Venezuelan woman’s soccer team and their journey to the World Cup.
In a country torn apart by political and economic upheaval, the team of young women find refuge in a sport that rises above poverty and gender discrimination. But when this soccer team goes undefeated in South America, they get a chance to win Venezuela’s first World Cup and gain acceptance in their home country.
The documentary follows girls who have achieved much in their sports careers, Guinness records, two-times fourth best in the world, and Deyna Castellanos, an 18-year old girl who was nominated by FIFA for best women’s player in the world.
The film has played at film festivals in the U.S., Canada, Austria, Mexico, and South America, including FNC in Montreal and St. John’s International Women’s Festival. It has received awards, including the Special Jury Award at the Atlanta Film Festival, Best Doc Feature at Indie Street Film Festival in New Jersey, and Best Documentary in Filmfestival Kitzbühel in Austria.
