Our spring ARTbus begins at the Ryerson Image Centre with a tour of True to the Eyes highlighting more than 200 photographs from the private collection of Howard and Carole Tanenbaum. The exhibition brings together a range of humanistic photographs, from anonymous vernacular imagery to masterworks by photographers such as Southworth & Hawes, William Notman, Ernest J. Bellocq, Brassaï, Lisette Model, Diane Arbus, Mary Ellen Mark, Jim Goldberg, Rafael Goldchain, and Edward Burtynsky.
Next, the ARTbus will visit Ears, Eyes, Voice curated by Dr. Julie Crooks at the Art Gallery of Burlington. This exhibition brings together important visual works by Black Canadian photojournalists Jules Elder, Eddie Grant, Diane Liverpool, Al Peabody, and Jim Russell. Their combined archive reveals a comprehensive and rare record that visually documents over three decades of stories that tell the important history of Toronto’s diverse Black communities.
Next, at Oakville Galleries at Centennial Square, the ARTbus will visit the opening of Rebecca Brewer & Rochelle Goldberg: Waves and Waves. Longtime friends and occasional collaborators, New York-based artist Rochelle Goldberg and Vancouver-based artist Rebecca Brewer have been engaged in a dialogue about their respective practices for years. This exhibition emerges from that conversation, with their distinct ideas unfolding materially in a shared space for the first time as both artists explore forms that allude to the relationship between human life and the natural world.
Lastly, at Oakville Galleries in Gairloch Gardens participants will visit the opening of Pio Abad: Splendour. The Manila-born, London-based artist brings together a series of objects and images that draw connections between moments of political and economic upheaval. Lifting its title from an Abi Morgan play, which takes place in the drawing room of an unnamed autocracy on the eve of its collapse, the exhibition imagines Gairloch Gardens as the setting of another scene of political decay.
