From Sept. 30 – Oct. 1, heritage buildings and cultural sites across Halton are opening their doors to showcase the spaces that make our communities unique. Part of the province-wide Doors Open Ontario,  Doors Open Halton invites residents and visitors alike to explore the past and present culture of communities across the region.

Oakville is taking part in this exciting event, offering access to some of the town’s most celebrated cultural sites. While we encourage everyone to visit each participating place, we’ve compiled a list of some spots that are sure to give you a real feel for Oakville’s identity. Read on for our Top 5 Can’t-Miss Cultural Sites at Doors Open.

 

1) Oakville Museum at Erchless Estate

Once the home of Oakville’s founding family, Erchless Estate now serves as the site of the Oakville Museum, featuring historical exhibits, gorgeous gardens and a spectacular view of Lake Ontario. Be sure to check out the permanent exhibits on Oakville’s black history and integral role in the Underground Railroad. A visit here is a great way to explore and understand Oakville’s unique heritage.

 

2) Oakville Galleries

With two locations and no shortage of amazing art exhibits each year, Oakville Galleries is a dream destination for any art lover. During Doors Open, two new projects will be available for view. FASTWURMS’ #Q33R_WTCH_P155 explores conceptual art, queer culture and mysticism, while Tamara Henderson’s Seasons End: Out of Body focuses on moon phases, the harvest and seasonal shifts. When visiting the Gairloch Gardens location, take some time to explore the beautiful landscaping and gardens that surround the site. With beautiful art and beautiful scenery, Oakville Galleries is an aesthetic experience not be missed.

 

3) Oakville Greenhouse

Home to more than 150,000 annuals, this 232-square-metre site is a must for nature lovers and blossom buffs. This serene and scenic spot features a collection of beautiful blooms, a peaceful pond and, during Doors Open, the opportunity to pot your own plant. Be sure to stop by the Oakville Greenhouse for a bit of greenery, scenery and more.

 

4) Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum

Explore the history of golf and its role in Canadian history at the Canadian Golf Hall of Fame and Museum. Try your hand at the indoor putting green, view legends of the links in the Hall of Fame and take a trip through sports history at this spectacular site. Located at the renowned Glen Abbey Golf Club, this spot is sure to be a hole-in-one for golf lovers.

 

5) Places of Worship

Explore Oakville’s diverse culture by touring the town’s places of worship. Marvel at the 19th-century architecture of several historical churches, enjoy food and activities at the modern Al Falah Islamic Centre, and learn about the many faiths practiced within the community. With so many great spiritual sites, we couldn’t just pick one!
